The other day in our Biology Lab, all of us students had the
opportunity to see a cadaver! It was AWESOME to say the least. As class
started, we all had this excited anticipation that radiated throughout the
room. Everyone was anxious to get a glimpse of a dead person. As we pulled on
our “morgue entering” robes and stretched the tight latex gloves over our
hands, the suspense killed us. We walked in to the eerily chilled, white room
wait to witness the corpse. Mrs. Haggard opened a huge refrigerated room door
that contained a large stainless steel box. She wheeled into us and opened the
container. The body was in a body bag, which was quickly unzipped. The cadaver
lay motionless on the table. At first it was a little uncomfortable because she
was an elderly woman. She was in her eighties with incisions all over her body.
It was weird because her skin had somewhat of a yellowish tone. This woman had obviously
had a tracheostomy, so I had obviously asked why the tube was still there after
three years. Mrs. Haggard said that they usually talke the bodies directly from
the emergency room to the lab just as they are. The poor woman also had
terrible black and flat lungs making it extremely hard for her to breath when
died. She had also been atrophying before she died because the energy of her
muscles was being used for her organs. It was a very interesting and
educational experience.
lol well i guess you and i recall this occasion in two different ways. i actually think that almost all of the class except you, taylor, and i were as scared as they could possibly be. you and taylor seemed to be having the times of your lives in there though. you two were more interested than i have ever seen you before, but that is not saying much because i have not known you for that long. you have hit all of the details on the head though. i remember the cadaver the exact same way that you do. although i remember a certain smell that you did not mention. i was not sure if it was just my imagination expecting a bad odor, or if it was the body and the chemicals used to preserve the body. but when I took a gander around the room and saw some of the faces of our classmates, I knew it was not just my imagination. I was surprised that everyone in the class, that was there that day, stayed through the whole thing and no one had to leave because they could not take seeing that. Even though it didn’t happen in our class our teacher did say it happened in the class before ours. She said that out of everyone it was not one of the young girls but it was a grown man. All of this being said, I do agree with you that it was very interesting and educational.
